In order to save at least a week of travel and expense I opted to ship my motorcycle to San Diego - my starting point for this trip. Gas, food and lodging averaged out to about $100/day last year, and shipping cost me $720. So I make out ahead, and I don't have to drive through the southwest again - straight, straight, and more straight roads; over 100F degrees; and small towns just barely under a gas tank apart.
I had checked out a pile of shipping companies before hand: some took a month to ship, some were very expensive, some didn't even have phone numbers on their website, and some looked pretty sketchy. I chose Federal, which is a branch of Allied. When I first called them, her computer was acting wonky and not taking all reservation data correctly, so she opted to call me back the next day. After getting my info in I could finally breath a sigh of relief. I had already purchased the plane ticket, so obviously I had to have this other step in place beforehand. About 10 days passed, and she called me back to ask what my shipping destination was. I had a mini heart attack, because the pickup date was only a few days away. She explained that, once again, not all the data had been saved in the reservation, but assured me that everything would work out OK and not to worry. What, me worry? On a trip of this caliber, I have to!
