Shipping delivery

I found a motorcycle dealer online that was near the San Diego airport, so I could head right over when I landed.  I called the manager and he was more than happy to keep it there for a few days until I arrived - and he sounded genuinely interested (and jealous) of my upcoming trip.  Total transit time was two weeks - exactly as the shipper had quoted me.  She set the pick-up date a tad early to guarantee the bike was there when I arrived.  Otherwise a 6,000 mile walk around the country would have taken considerably longer.

The manager called me back on the arrival date and said the bike had made it.  I asked jokingly, "Is it in one piece?"

His pause let me know something was up before he added, "Well, one of the tail lights was punched out and cracked."  "But otherwise, no damage or scratches."

Oh, well.  Things happen, and it can easily be fixed.  I've already gotten the claim form from the shipper.  The dealer has ordered the part and will put it on the bike, as well as perform an oil change, when I arrive.  "I'll just let the service department know that we have a special circumstance and ask them to put aside their other projects to help you."  I find that level of customer service very generous.  I bet most of them ride, and it's nice that the Fun Bike Center understands what position I'm in.
