Man, what a ride up from San Fran to Eureka, CA. Hundreds of miles of some of the twistiest roads in the country, not many cars along the route, and perfect weather. I saw at least three dozen pannier bicyclists, and three full frame backpackers going up or down Route 1 today. I've hiked and biked with full gear before, but neither beats a motorcycle. I passed some cool Pop. 50 towns up the coast, like Marshall, and saw some crazy "mountain overlooks ocean" homes in Hardy. Every inn proclaims "awesome view of the ocean", but every view today was awesome, so they really have to compete.
I had lunch in a quaint New England style town of Mendocino. It's a "young" town and very friendly. They thrive on tourism, and I made the mistake of buying $4.70 gas, when 10 miles up the street it was only $2.99. Two restaurant owners and I had a great chat over dinner about life in the easy lane. Below is some of the deadly cliffs just a bit below Main St. Every year they have to pull some fool up that fell off the ledge.
I drove my bike into a tree today...or rather through a tree. It was another tourist gimmick a few miles off the route, so why not. Then after that one, still in the redwoods, I found "biggest tree house" and "grandfather tree - oldest/largest tree in the woods". Finished today 330 miles from San Fran in a moderately sized logging town of Eureka. But I first found Lost Coast Brewing pub and sampled their 10 lastest brews.
hey, thanks for linking to this from FB - wondered how the hell you were getting the bike out to CA, and you have an interesting eye for photos - fun. Safe journey!
